PSAT and National Merit

The PSAT/NMSQT and SAT test related skills in the same standard digital timing: 2 hours 14 minutes plus a break. The PSAT/NMSQT tops out at 1520 and can qualify eligible students for National Merit; the SAT tops out at 1600 and is used in college admissions.

### Compare the specific tests

“PSAT” can mean PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, or PSAT 8/9. Their purposes and score ceilings differ.

| Test | Total scale | Main distinction |
| --- | --- | --- |
| SAT | 400–1600 | College admissions test |
| PSAT/NMSQT | 320–1520 | National Merit qualifying assessment for eligible students |
| PSAT 10 | 320–1520 | Tenth-grade assessment; not a National Merit entry test |
| PSAT 8/9 | 240–1440 | Earlier assessment with a lower ceiling |

### The PSAT/NMSQT is not a shorter SAT

The standard digital PSAT/NMSQT has the same 54 Reading and Writing and 44 Math question counts and the same module times as the SAT. Its assessed difficulty range and score scale differ.

Do not prepare for shorter modules because you heard the PSAT is a shorter practice test. Rehearse the actual timings and approved accommodations for your administration.

### Use the result without adding a made-up bonus

Start with the domain feedback and your uncertain questions. A PSAT score does not guarantee a higher SAT result after a set number of months. Take a fresh official SAT practice test when you need an SAT baseline.

For National Merit, use the Selection Index and your eligibility information, rather than treating the total score as a state cutoff. [The index formula](https://1600.now/sat-faq/how-is-the-national-merit-selection-index-calculated) weights Reading and Writing twice.

- **[Is the SAT harder than the PSAT?](https://1600.now/sat-faq/sat-vs-psat-difficulty)**

The SAT assesses a broader difficulty range than the PSAT/NMSQT and has a higher score ceiling: 1600 instead of 1520. They test related skills, but a PSAT result does not guarantee any fixed increase on the SAT.

National Merit screening uses your PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index, not one nationwide total-score cutoff. Semifinalist qualifying scores vary by state or selection unit and graduation class; eligibility requirements and later application steps also matter.
