Format and timing

Is the SAT essay still required?

The weekend SAT has no essay. A separate essay remains in certain state-provided SAT School Day administrations, so ask your school coordinator whether your school-day test includes it.

Weekend testing and School Day are different

Removing the optional weekend essay did not remove every SAT essay administration. College Board still publishes School Day essay instructions and practice. A school-day requirement is also different from a college application essay requirement.

What the remaining essay asks you to do

The task gives you a passage and asks how its author builds a persuasive argument. You have 50 minutes. Analyze the author’s evidence, reasoning, and persuasive choices; do not spend the response arguing for your own position on the topic.

For example, identify a statistic, explain which claim it supports, and explain why that connection could persuade the intended audience. Quoting evidence without explaining its role leaves the analysis unfinished.

Check your schedule and scoring

Essay scores are reported separately and do not change the 400–1600 total. If your school includes the essay, budget the extra testing time and use College Board’s essay practice in Bluebook. Ask the counselor for the actual requirement before planning to leave after Math.
