Scores and interpretation

The SAT is not graded on a classroom-style curve against the people testing that day. College Board uses statistical scoring and equating to put different test forms on a comparable scale.

### A curve and equating answer different questions

A classroom curve might assign grades according to the group’s results. SAT equating supports comparable score meaning across different forms; a strong group at your test center does not consume the available high scores.

Digital scoring also considers item characteristics and the pattern of correct and incorrect answers. Calling it a “generous curve” does not supply a usable points-per-question rule.

### Why equal correct counts can yield different scores

Two students can get the same number of questions right but receive different section scores because they answered different items correctly. Even two students sitting on the same date can receive different second modules.

Do not turn a practice-test conversion from an old paper form into a digital SAT score prediction. [How SAT scoring works](https://1600.now/sat-faq/how-is-the-sat-scored) separates official scores, raw accuracy, and practice estimates.

### Should I choose an easier test date?

Do not select a date based on a rumored October, March, or international “curve.” Select a date that fits your application deadline, center availability, and preparation time. Difficulty adjustments are part of scoring, not a calendar strategy.

SAT Reading and Writing and Math each receive a 200–800 score; adding them gives a 400–1600 total. Digital scoring uses responses across both modules and question characteristics, so a correct-answer count alone cannot determine the score.

A perfect SAT total is 1600: 800 in Reading and Writing plus 800 in Math. The total is a scaled score, so it is not a public count of how many questions you answered correctly.
