## How the digital SAT works

The standard digital SAT runs in Bluebook at a test center or school. You answer 98 questions across Reading and Writing and Math, with 134 minutes of testing and a 10-minute break. Start by learning the module limits and practicing on the device you will use.

### The four-module schedule

Each section has two modules. You may move between questions and change answers in the active module; once its time expires, you cannot reopen it. Finishing another module early does not restore that access.

| Part | Questions presented | Time |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Reading and Writing, module 1 | 27 | 32 minutes |
| Reading and Writing, module 2 | 27 | 32 minutes |
| Break | — | 10 minutes |
| Math, module 1 | 22 | 35 minutes |
| Math, module 2 | 22 | 35 minutes |

- Standard testing plus the scheduled break takes 2 hours 24 minutes. Check-in and instructions take additional time.
- Approved extended time or other accommodations can change the schedule.
- Some state-provided School Day administrations add an essay; the weekend test has no essay.

### What adapts, and what does not

The first module in each section mixes question difficulties. Your performance helps determine the second module’s mix. The test does not change difficulty after every individual answer. Math and Reading and Writing adapt separately.

Continue working normally if module 2 feels hard or easy. That impression is not a reliable score report, and College Board does not publish a universal number-correct routing cutoff to apply to every form.

### How the reported score works

Reading and Writing and Math are each scored from 200 to 800. The section scores add to a total from 400 to 1600. A result of 620 and 700 is a total of 1320.

Digital scoring uses responses and question characteristics across both modules. Two students with the same number correct can receive different section scores. Two pretest questions per module do not count, but you cannot identify them while testing.

There is no wrong-answer deduction. Make your best attempt rather than leaving a question blank to avoid a penalty. Treat a third-party [score calculator](https://1600.now/score-calculator) as an estimate, not the official scoring algorithm.

### What you need to solve

Reading and Writing combines reading comprehension, vocabulary in context, grammar, and revision in short text-based items. Questions can include a pair of texts or a graphic. Math covers algebra, nonlinear expressions and functions, data analysis, geometry, and trigonometry.

A useful first drill checks different reasoning steps: identify the claim in a reading passage, locate the independent clauses in a punctuation item, and name the variable before solving a word problem. The [Math guide](https://1600.now/digital-sat-math) and [Reading and Writing guide](https://1600.now/digital-sat-reading-writing) break these into worked examples.

### Tools worth rehearsing

Bluebook includes a question navigator, mark-for-review control, annotation tools, and calculator access in Math. Use a preview to learn where they are before taking a scored practice test.

For Math, try entering two equations and reading their intersection, then check the requested coordinate. For a reading item, practice marking the sentence that supports your choice without highlighting the whole passage. Scratch paper is provided by testing staff.

### Putting numbers into a Math response

Some Math questions have no answer choices: enter one numeric result in the response field. You may use an integer, a decimal, or a fraction. For a mixed-number result of three and one-half, enter $7/2$ or $3.5$, not a mixed number.

The digital directions allow up to five characters for a positive response and six including the minus sign for a negative response. If a fraction does not fit, use its decimal equivalent according to the response directions. Do not enter units, a percent symbol, or a variable in the number field.

Use the exact directions shown in Bluebook for decimal precision. When more than one answer is valid, enter one; an expression listing several solutions is not a numeric response. Try one of these items in preview so the entry format is familiar before your timer starts.

### Prepare the device, not just the content

Use College Board’s official [Bluebook download](https://1600.now/bluebook-app-guide) guidance and check its current device requirements. Personal Chromebooks and phones are not approved testing devices. For a school-managed device, ask the school to handle installation.

Complete weekend exam setup 1–5 days before the test on your testing device and obtain the admission ticket. Charge the device, bring its permitted charger, and follow the ticket’s arrival instructions. A working practice app is not a substitute for finishing the real exam setup.

Digital is the standard administration, but approved paper or braille accommodations exist. Use the format and assistive technology authorized for your own test instead of assuming every student must use the same setup.

### A first preparation cycle

Take an unused official practice test with your actual timing and tools. Review missed and uncertain questions, then choose two or three specific skills to practice. “Math” is too broad; “translating a percentage decrease” identifies an action.

After a few focused sessions, retry related unseen questions and take a timed module. Check whether the reasoning survives the timer before scheduling another full test. The [study-plan guide](https://1600.now/how-to-study-for-sat) gives a sample weekly sequence you can shorten or extend.

### Questions and answers

#### Is the digital SAT taken at home?

No. Standard SAT testing is administered at a registered test center or through a participating school, not as an unsupervised at-home exam.

#### Is every SAT administration digital?

Digital is standard, but College Board-approved paper or braille accommodations are available for eligible students.

#### Can I go back to a previous module?

No. You can navigate within the active module only.

#### Is the score a percent correct?

No. It is a scaled result. Number correct alone cannot determine a digital SAT score.
