SAT Basics

Choose an SAT date by working back from score deadlines, allowing focused preparation and a retake, and checking current registration dates.

A first SAT in junior-year spring gives you time to review and retake before senior-year applications. Your best date depends on readiness, school workload, and the latest scores your colleges or scholarships accept. Work backward from those deadlines before registering.

### Start with the deadline for scores

A college's application deadline and its last accepted testing date are not necessarily the same. Some programs allow later scores, others require everything with the application, and scholarships may use separate deadlines. Open each institution's current instructions and record the exact rule.

Then choose a preferred final sitting that leaves a margin for the published score release and any required reporting. Do not assume a November test is accepted for every early application, or that October is always the last allowed date. If the policy is unclear, ask the admissions office before buying the test.

A usable planning note says "Program A accepts scores from this sitting, self-reporting is allowed at application, scholarship deadline is this date." "Applications are in November" is not enough information.

### Junior spring is a starting point, not a requirement

[College Board recommends](https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/help-center/how-many-times-can-student-take-sat-and-when-should-they-take-it) testing in junior spring and senior fall. That pattern gives you an official result and a later chance to improve. You can test earlier if your preparation is ready, or later if your school and application schedule require it.

Take an unseen practice test before picking a date solely by grade level. Review whether your errors are small execution problems or content you have not learned yet. If systems of equations and quadratic functions are still new, choose a date that gives you time to learn and practice them.

An ambitious score target does not automatically mean three months or six months for every student. A 1500 goal with a stable 1450 practice range is a different project from the same goal with a 1050 baseline. Use the actual missed skills to estimate the work.

### Current dates to consider

For planning from October 2026, these are the remaining published weekend dates through June 2027. Deadlines are 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. The October 3 sitting has already passed its registration deadlines; it is not a last-minute registration option.

| Test date | Regular registration | Late registration / change deadline |
| --- | --- | --- |
| November 7, 2026 | October 23, 2026 | October 27, 2026 |
| December 5, 2026 | November 20, 2026 | November 24, 2026 |
| March 6, 2027 | February 19, 2027 | February 23, 2027 |
| May 1, 2027 | April 16, 2027 | April 20, 2027 |
| June 5, 2027 | May 21, 2027 | May 25, 2027 |

### Leave a real improvement window

If your first and second sittings are close together, you need time to receive the first score, review your preparation, and practice something different. A retake immediately after the first without any new evidence may mostly repeat the same performance.

For example, a junior could use March for a first result and May or June for a retake. A senior with an early deadline might already have a summer result and use a permitted fall sitting after focused review. These are planning examples, not a requirement to take those dates.

Put the available study sessions on a calendar. Four 45-minute weekday sessions plus one longer review block may fit better than an imaginary two-hour daily plan. The [study-plan generator](https://1600.now/sat-study-plan-generator) can place practice around your selected date; adjust for exam weeks and activities.

### Access and school-day testing can change the answer

Ask your school whether it offers SAT School Day and how registration works. In-school registration is handled by the school or district. A weekend SAT requires your own registration and a seat at an available center. Do not assume a nearby school hosts every date.

If you need to borrow a device from College Board for SAT Weekend, submit the request at least 30 days before test day. A standard registration deadline does not replace that earlier device deadline. Start approved accommodation arrangements early as well.

Before paying, check your college score policies, available center, device plan, and preparation calendar. Then reserve the date you can realistically prepare for. If you are already close to test day, use the [two-week plan](https://1600.now/blog/how-to-study-for-sat-2-weeks) to narrow the work rather than attempting an entire curriculum.
