When Should You Take the SAT? The Best Test Dates Explained
A guide to choosing your first SAT test date based on grade level, application deadlines, and how long you realistically need to prep.
The Standard Timeline
Most students take the SAT for the first time in the spring of junior year and retake in the fall of senior year. This gives you a baseline early enough to improve and a retake before college deadlines.
If You're Aiming for 1500+
Take a diagnostic in fall of junior year, then plan on 3–4 months of structured prep before your first real sitting. A second attempt three months later gives you room to push a 1400 into 1500+ territory.
If You're Applying Early
Early Action and Early Decision deadlines are November 1 or November 15. That means your final retake must be the August or October SAT of senior year. Back-plan from there.
