SAT Transitions Questions: The Complete Guide

Transitions questions test logical relationships between sentences. Here is a decision tree that solves almost every one.

    Identify the Relationship First

Read the sentence before and after the blank. Decide on the relationship — contrast, cause, example, continuation, conclusion — before looking at the choices.

    Common Transition Categories

Each category has a set of expected transitions.

    • Contrast: however, in contrast, nevertheless, on the other hand
    • Cause: therefore, consequently, thus, as a result
    • Example: for example, for instance, specifically
    • Continuation: moreover, furthermore, in addition
    • Conclusion: in summary, ultimately, overall
